9/11 missing signs

These are 9 of the 240 SX-70 Polaroids I took of signs people put up after their loved ones didn’t surface from the bombing of the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001…

Thirteen years ago, I was in a cab crossing the 59th street bridge, cursing the traffic, when I turned to look downtown and saw the World Trade Center burning. By the time I’d delivered my assignment (I was shooting fashion week parties for style.com at the time) the whole world had turned upside down as we realized that a brutal act of terrorism can actually happen right at our front door.

For the next few days, I was marooned in the west village with my then boyfriend (now husband) and my SX-70 Polaroid camera (not sure why I had it with me, but there you are.) We spent lots of time wandering the streets, and I found myself compelled to photograph the missing sings that people were beginning to put up– evidence of a desperate optimism that was unfortunately largely unfounded.

And now we listen to President Obama talking about beginning yet another War On Terror against a new mutation of Al Qaeda that threatens to put us all back in the same place we were over a decade ago.

I know that history repeats itself, but it seems to me that the cycles have become unsustainably short.

May all of the once and future victims of this horrible chapter in history rest in peace and may we eventually learn how to live with each other in such a way that we do not feel compelled to blow our fellow man into oblivion every time they stray from whatever our chosen value set might be.

Most of the time, out of focus photographs require instant deletion. Especially when taken with your phone.

Sometimes, though, they are magic.

Yesterday, at some point is a series of photographs that describe a moment I experienced during the previous day. The posts are meant to be stand alone images, though at times I can’t control myself, and I end up expanding the caption into a more lengthy bit of text. Hopefully the extra information is useful, or at least interesting. If not, feel free to ignore it.

la fondita, amagansett

We had lunch at La Fondita in Amagansett, which is well worth a voyage down the over-travelled Montauk Highway if you are in this neck of the woods. Delicious street style Mexican food, picnic tables or blankets by the pond, cheese quesadillas for the little ones, watermelon juice…

This photo was taken while waiting very patiently for the number 15 to be called…

summer dinner

A perfect summer meal…

Baked fresh halibut with a charissa/yogurt sauce, fresh broccoli sprouts, tomato/mozzarella salad with fresh basil and perfect, sweet, barely cooked corn on the cob.

A heartfelt thank you to my extremely gifted husband for cooking this meal and creating a perfect ending to a wonderful summer day.

Joe Bradley 23 skidoo karma amagansett 2014

Ok so I took this on Saturday, but it’s close enough.

The brilliant, irreverent Joe Bradley threw me a total curve ball with his most recent show. Last time I was paying attention, there were lots of almost kid like drawings with very minimal color. This time around, it’s huge shiny blocks of bright primary colors, with some suggested potential activities (“VISUALIZE DOLPHINS”, “EAT A PEACH”, or my favorite “GO BUILD IN HELL”) posted on the surrounding walls.

Never a dull moment. Always a good one.

If you’re out East, check it out. You have 2 weeks.

Sound advice, if you ask me…

cookies

… I finished the box of these delicious two moon rosemary sea salt shortbread cookies I got from Good Eggs last week.

Luckily, I had the presence of mind to photograph them before they disappeared. Unfortunately, I did not think to include another box in my next order, which makes me very sad.

How I will survive, I do not know.

ecco farm stand

I’d like to say that the reason I have been MIA from this blog for a couple of days is that my husband swept me up and took me on a whirlwind vacation in Paris.

Unfortunately, that is not the case.

In real life, I have been getting our house ready to surrender to another family for the month of August. This is the second summer we are renting our place, and while this year’s prep is less painful than last summer’s, it is still a drag. I’m not gonna lie.

But we still have to eat. So rather than a photo of my basement that is filling up with boxes of our stuff, I give you this shot of the farmstand from which I bought the pint of gooseberries that I am planning on turning into jam.

Just as soon as I finish scrubbing down the railing, cleaning the front porch, scouring the oven…

A couple of weeks ago we had some time to kill in SoHo before a doctor’s appointment, so when my daughter suddenly expressed the urgent desire for a sun hat, we headed over to J Crew just to see if they had anything there that was reasonable. And lo and behold, 15 minutes later, we walked out with the perfect hat: wide brimmed, easily foldable, and blue (one of her two favorite colors.)

As you can see from the above photo, it is in high rotation.

rockaway_beach

Hard to believe this is Queens, but there it is.

We spent a glorious 24 hours in Rockaway yesterday (you’ll be hearing more about this in the next couple of days, I promise) and the Atlantic Ocean gracefully welcomed us to her shores.

Summer has really begun.

Sure there’s a huge crazy pipe that’s replenishing lost sand and sounds of post-Sandy construction everywhere. But the ocean is the ocean is the ocean.

And that’s all that matters.
