Yesterday, at some point…

dino pokemon

This is something that one might not expect to see backstage at a Dinosaur Jr show at the Bowery Ballroom.

And yet…

Yesterday, at some point…

mike's 50 bday

So last night I went to a real old school birthday party. Small dark room, DJ in the corner spinning Slick Rick and Tribe Called Quest, a bunch of sweaty people, mostly in t shirts and jeans, dancing their a**s off… I rolled back into my apt at around 3 am, after a quick slice of pizza to take the edge off. Just like back in the day.

Except for this time, the wine was top shelf, drinks were on the house, and the birthday balloons proudly announced the half-century lifespan of the honoree.

If this is 50, bring it on.

Yesterday, at some point…

gift bag

This is a photograph of one of the gift bags we made for my daughter’s most recent birthday party. It wasn’t taken yesterday, but the party was recent enough that it still rings fresh in my mind. We try to make our gift bags original and free of candy and “junk” (which means totally different things to me and my daughter, but whatever) This year we gave everyone a little wooden star, a little bird that you can clip onto a tree or a bedpost, a miniature rubics cube and a small bit of play dough (evidently all kids still love goop of some kind…) We made the bags out of fabric, cut out individual tags and tied them up with some white ribbon we had laying around from an old craft project. (See– sometimes saving stuff is totally justified!)

The party was really fun, but crazy expensive in the way that evidently many NYC parties are when you rent out a space. I could go on about the Birthday Party Racket, but I am going to take the high road and just remember the screams of joy, the happy expressions on all of the kids faces, and the fact that we are not going to be having a birthday party again for a long time (we’re switching to experiences instead, thank goodness…)

Yesterday, at some point…

momofuku noodle bar

Yesterday, while running some errands in the east village, I looked up and saw Momofuku Noodle Bar across the street. And I am happy to say that I had the good sense to stop in for lunch.

The place was packed, and I was squeezed in between two parties at the bar with basically no place to keep my bag… And yet my Spicy Miso Ramen was so delicious I didn’t mind at all.

The lesson? Always treat yourself to lunch when you can. You will never regret the extra 45ish minutes of relative peace and culinary satisfaction.

Yesterday, at some point…

the cliffs in LIC

Yesterday was our second school holiday in a row, as NYC schools have started to observe the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Adha, the feast of sacrifice. We spent a good part of the day in Long Island City at The Cliffs, an indoor climbing facility where kids (and adults) channel their inner Spider Man, scale the 45 ft walls and then “fly” down thanks to the magic of the auto belays.

I think my kid may have found her own superpower…

Yesterday, at some point… (except I actually shot this one today)

#onemorelatte

Ok so this one is because I didn’t get much sleep last night because last night somebody tried to bust into my apt through my bedroom window which was wide open but luckily has bars so it didn’t work out so well for them. I heard a thump, saw a flashlight moving around, immediately closed the window and then called the cops. They took off pretty quickly. I wish they’d been caught but am happy just to escape unscathed. Though it took a good hour to get my daughter back to sleep and then another 45 mins to calm myself down and then oh look it’s 6 am time to get up, make lunch, answer a couple of emails and get my kid to school. After which I had planned on working but I was too brain dead to do anything till meeting old friends for lunch (and after, for this coffee) which always makes me feel better. But not entirely better, as I subsequently left my bag (with my iPad inside) at the cafe, realized 2 hours later that my bag was gone, retraced my steps and thanked my lucky stars that they’d held it for me there. So I’m not sure if I just had the #worstdayever or the #bestdayever but I do know that despite the above caffeinated drink I am exhausted and will be blowing off all productive activity tonight and going straight to bed. #onemorelatte #lifeinthebigcity

(Please excuse the fact that this is a direct quote from my Instagram feed, but I am too fried to get all creative and different with the text this evening. I am impressed with myself for even getting this posted before I pass out…)

Excitedly waiting for the baseball game to start… The Sag Harbor Whalers vs the Southampton Breakers. (Game ended after 12 innings tied 4 – 4, FYI)

shelter island sunset by brooke williams

Last night I was lucky enough to see this sunset. I was also surrounded by friends and family, eating delicious food (It’s corn season again, my favorite time of year!) drinking lovely wine, listening to music that I am a little embarrassed to admit I love but hey, I didn’t make this playlist so maybe it’s ok to be able to sing along to Creedence Clearwater Revival…

Sometimes the world is just simply a beautiful place to be. Savor those moments, when they happen. Because these are the times that make all the other stuff worth it.
