birthday candles

For my birthday, I gave myself the gift of not having to completely clean up after my merry band of party guests (aka my dad, sister and nephew) departed. Which is just as well, as it gives me the chance to memorialize, in daylight, the birthday candles that spell out my name. It took just about a half a century, but finally “BROOKE” is one of the pre-assembled names on the rack-o-candles at Party City.

I’m not sure if this is a good sign or a harbinger of doom, but I plan to take advantage regardless.

Yesterday, at some point is a series of photographs that describe a moment I experienced during the previous day (mostly). The posts are meant to be stand alone images, though at times I can’t control myself, and I end up expanding the caption into a more lengthy bit of text. Hopefully the extra information is useful, or at least interesting. If not, feel free to ignore it.

dustin yellin

Last night we went to the New York City Ballet and were treated both to 3 breathtaking and seminal works by Balenchine and to Dustin Yellin’s life-size multi-layered explosive chaotic ethereal glass collage sculpture installation pieces. They are called Psychogeoraphies and were commissioned as part of the NYC Ballet’s Art Series.

They are not to be missed.

Sag Harbor, NY

NYC did not get the 30 inches of snow promised last week. But Sag Harbor did.

And it was magic.

metropolitain opera house

This week, in a brilliant move to recapture the thrill of date night, we went to see La Bohéme at the Metropolitan Opera House. I now suddenly find myself listening to opera and wishing that I had a light like this one in my living room…

teacher holiday gifts

This year, our teacher holiday gifts are pumpkin loaves, as pumpkins have become the latest obsession around here. Recipe thanks to the NY Times, wrapping paper from One Kings Lane, rubber bands (the best part!) from MOMA.

On the way to the Sag Harbor Ragamuffin Parade

So lets see… we have a wood elf, two dogs, and… is that… Gilligan?

bug trap at the milk pail

A bug trap in disguise as an apple at the Milk Pail orchard in Bridgehampton, NY.

You should all go there to pick apples (and pumpkins) through the end of the month, and then lose yourself (and eat some popcorn) in the corn maize at Fairview farm across the street!

People's Climate March NYC 2014

We spent the day with almost 400,000 fellow citizens of the world speaking out and voicing our concern about the state of the global climate and demanding that the powers that be begin to actually do something to turn the tide of global warming before it’s too late.

My phone was full (of course) so I went old school and shot polaroids of some of my favorite signs… there was so much energy on the streets of Manhattan and it made me feel like we might actually make a difference. Plus it’s so important for our kids, the next generation of leaders, to grow up understanding the importance of speaking out for what you believe in.

I went to bed last night exhausted but happy.

For more info, photos, inspiration, etc, check out the People’s Climate March.

redbook oct issue

I knew it was coming (the photo shoot and the interviews were back in mid July) and I’d even seen a digital version (the photo editor sent me a pdf of our page a few days ago). But it somehow didn’t feel real until my mother walked in with the October issue of Redbook in her hands. And there we were, all smiling and made up and happily sharing our family beauty secrets with the world.

I loved meeting the other families on the shoot and feel honored to be in such good company. The Redbook crew couldn’t have been lovelier or more professional and Andrew Eccles is a world class photographer who has been shooting beautiful portraits since the olden days of film. But best of all was getting to hang out and play dress up with my mom and my daughter, whose company I adore.

So a big thank you, Redbook, for giving me the opportunity to remember how lucky I am to have such inspiring women around me!
