Yesterday, at some point…

strawberry

Last weekend we went strawberry picking and this particular example won the prize as the most oddly shaped berry any of us had ever seen. It was delicious, though, as was the rest of the haul. It’s a miracle any made it all the way home with us.

The real prime season for this delectable fruit is quickly coming to an end, so if you can get yourselves out to a farm for some picking, now is the time. If you’re on the east end of Long Island, I strongly recommend Hank’s Farmstand in Southampton, which offers strawberries, raspberries and blackberries as well as pumpkins for the picking. Nice fields and not at all crowded, this place feels like an actual farm rather than the suburban petting zoo style spots I’m sure we’ve all experienced at least once.

Oh and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Yesterday, at some point is a series of photographs that describe a moment I experienced during the previous day. The posts are meant to be stand alone images, though at times I can’t control myself, and I end up expanding the caption into a more lengthy bit of text. Hopefully the extra information is useful, or at least interesting. If not, feel free to ignore it.

Sometimes pictures need no captions.

It is finally summer, and with the season comes the horrible Sunday night traffic on the Long Island Expressway.

But all is not lost, for the venerable Lobster Inn (now officially called the Lobster Grille Inn, but whatever) is open for business. And driving back to the city full of delicious lobsters and mussels and french fries and salads makes the whole bumper to bumper situation considerably more bearable.

Plus you get to hang out by the water (see above) whilst waiting for the feast to begin.

ps: Please forgive me… The regular Monday links post is coming, but a bit late this week.

farmers market strawberries

Again, this was taken the day before yesterday but who’s keeping track, really?

This is my favorite time of the year, when the tables at the farmers markets are laden with strawberries and it feels like the entire place is bursting with the optimism of an upcoming summer full of colorful deliciousness.

Let the fruit season begin!

Yesterday, at some point…

1962

Technically, this moment happened the day before yesterday, but it was too good not to put up here.

There we were, driving through Queens on the Long Island Expressway, minding our own business, when I looked out of my window and was suddenly transported back to 1962 (or thereabouts) by this wonderful man and his excellent car. His attention to detail (the haircut, the glasses, the suit…) is truly inspirational. There is no doubt that he was having the time of his life.

As well he should be.

He and his car were the best looking things I have ever seen on that road. Period.

Lattes are so 2013.

Now it’s all about the short white, which is an Australian, slightly smaller, more concentrated version of the venerable Italian drink.

I learned all about them at St Balmain, the newest cafe in my area (it’s on N 8th between Bedford and Driggs, in Williamsburg) They are delicious and well on their way to becoming this mother’s favorite little helper, if you know what I’m saying.

The food that this spot serves up looks great too, though I have yet to try anything. Summer is coming however… and with that, lots of free time to spend sampling various lunch spots in the hood. We’ll have to add this place to the list!

All sorts of minor logistical things went wrong yesterday. But when I saw this field of blue at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, my breath was taken away and I started the whole day again from scratch.

I remember, so clearly, riding the subway as a kid, obsessed with looking out the windows trying to catch a glimpse the mysterious world of the tunnels and the abandoned stations.

It’s comforting to see that some things haven’t changed at all…

momofuku milk bar

I am so lucky, I repeat SO LUCKY, that Momofuku Milk Bar is a place I get to pass by everyday. I would probably eat their pork buns every day, too, if I didn’t have some kind of nagging idea that a constant stream of pork, cucumbers and whatever the bun part is made out of (rice?) doesn’t constitute a balanced diet.

Although now that I’m thinking about it, it doesn’t sound half bad actually…

Auldlyn Higgins at 16

This is a portrait of my mother, when she was 16 years old, which hangs in the living room of my parents’ house. I have always been fascinated by it, sometimes wondering where that dress ended up, but mostly wondering what was going on inside that head of hers.

Yesterday was no different.

Maybe one of these days, I’ll ask her.
