Monday, Monday– or more links about beating the heat

When it’s 100 million degrees outside, sometimes it’s best to just give up on the outdoors altogether, settle into a nice air-conditioned movie theater and enjoy Ant Man, which is actually quite good. The trailer doesn’t really do it justice, but here it is anyway.

If you live anywhere near Williamsburg, you should drop everything and go to McCarren Pool. Which is HUGE and CLEAN and especially great with kids (but they have a large lap only area as well, so you can get your proper swim on if need be.)

I’m not exactly sure why, but I always feel relieved when I spray on a bit of the aptly named Save Your Skin every day moisturizer by Solar Recover…

Zero Maria Cornejo bathing suits are on mad sale right now. Run don’t walk…

Hibiscus tea is great for hydrating and cooling down the body, especially when in iced form. It also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, protects the liver and has anti-depressant properties. What’s not to love? Learn a bit more about it and then go buy some.

Something about a pair of white Ray-Ban sunglasses screams summer to me. Even though they are marketed as a vehicle for celebrating the winter.

A while back I blogged abut making our own ice cream sandwiches. It’s still a great idea.

Does the world get taken over by computers because of their super-intelligence or does it get destroyed because of the machines’ stupidity?

Here are 10 hilarious games to play in the car with your family while you drive to Niagra Falls, or Maine, or Bozeman, Montana, or wherever you’re headed… (Thanks, Joanna Goddard, for this tip)

And if those aren’t enough, try singing some of these tunes from the Catchiest Songs Of All Time list and then see which one sticks in your head the longest.

It’s summer, which means we’ll be (hopefully!) spending lots of weekends at other people’s exotic getaways. Which also means it’s hostess gift season. I’m thinking about changing it up this year and giving these homemade bath bombs? If I can get it together to make them that is…

There are so many awesome vegetables flooding the farmers market these days… Lucky Peach has a whole chart (they call it The Contorni Matrix) that details a few new ways to serve them up.

And last but not least, f you’re going to go leopard print with your bathing suit this season, I think this is the way to go.

Monday, Monday… or more links about things we could use for the little cabin in Maine

maine sunset

Here’s what a typical sunset looks like from out our window. A far cry from the mean streets of NYC, let me tell you…

Ok so we are now in the aforementioned island-off-the-coast-of-Maine and have indeed used a boat to get groceries and ice cream (though we also brought our own ice cream maker and made some killer strawberry ice cream last night.)

Whenever we are up here, my husband and I spend hours fantasy-redecorating this little house. And now that we have wifi, we can go so far as researching specific things that would change this place from paradise into a super stylish paradise. And so, in honor of this effort, I share with you all a few links to some of my favorite items. Who knows? Maybe you will find use for some of this stuff in your secret woodlands hideout, too…

ice cream maker
We brought up our somewhat large (but awesome) Cuisinart ice cream maker, but these little ball ones might be a better option for the near-camping aspect of our vacation. Maybe next year…

food52 bluetooth speaker

The whole cabin is made of wood, wood walls, wood floors… So I figure we may as well continue the theme in every way. Like these wooden bluetooth speakers (to replace the early eighties era boom box currently sitting on the shelf)

food52 toolbox
And (also from the fabulous food52) this wooden toolbox. Because I’m sure that tools work better when they live someplace nice.

vintage thonet chair one kings lane

For some reason that I don’t fully understand, we have a set of too low outdoor chairs around the dining table. Which drives me crazy every time I sit down to eat. Wouldn’t it be nice to have these vintage Thonet chairs (from One Kings Lane) instead? They go with the whole wood theme too…

wooden trash can
My daughter has rightfully complained that there is no wastepaper basket in her room (hence all the crumpled pieces of paper scattered about the floor.) The more organized and on top of it parent that I strive to be will be ordering her one of these wooden cans from Umbra, in lavender of course.

jadeite glass mixing bowls
Also for some strange reason, we have almost no mixing/serving bowls. Just some oversized soup bowls and a stainless steel one that reminds me of something one might fins in an army barracks… So I was thinking something like these jadeite mixing bowls would work. Not so lovely that you don’t want to beat eggs in them, yet nice enough to put on the table filled with salad or fruit or… lobsters… (This is Maine, for crying out loud.)

wooden game house
Last but certainly not least, we have to fill the time on rainy days, or evenings, or any time we don’t feel like being all outdoorsy and active. This house of games promises to keep us all entertained for… like… ever… With nary a plug or a screen in sight!

Happy National Martini Day!!

I found this lady while searching through the creative commons photos on Flickr.

I found this lady while searching through the creative commons photos on Flickr.

Yes that’s right. Today is National Martini Day. And if I drank Martinis (and wasn’t just recovering from a fairly brutal summer cold) I would be shaking myself up one of these babies right about now. It’s my daughter’s last day of school, and while that means the end of the miles-long series of school related activities/celebrations/performances/etc, it also means that the two of us are about to become 24-hour constant companions. With all the joy and pain that accompanies that particular situation.

So bottoms up!

For those of you who may want to dig a bit deeper into the world of this classic libation, I give you a bit of martini history, a whole bunch of martini recipes (from the classic to the blood orange cabernet you never knew you were craving), a photographic survey of some of this drink’s most iconic fans, and, last but not least, a lovely post about how one might get over a hangover (not that any of you will need that, but just in case…)

Monday, Monday… or more links about clothes, jerk chicken and making honey with wild roses

zero maria cornejo dress on sale

This dress (from Maria Cornejo) can be yours. For real. Because it’s on sale right now.

What is code? I’ve always wanted to know the answer and now, evidently, Paul Ford is going to tell me.

Having spent many a childhood holiday visiting family in Jamaica, I am highly skeptical that some white chick from the New York Times can actually master Jerk Chicken. But as the aforementioned white chick is the inimitable Julia Moskin, I’m going to have to give this recipe a try.

And I quote: “David Achter de Molen, lead singer of Dutch band John Coffey, was in the middle of crowdsurfing (crowdwalking?) when a half-full beer came hurtling in his direction. Displaying some impressive hand-eye coordination, he caught it (and, for good measure, drank it).” And Digg has the video to prove it.

Evidently all I have to do is buy this app and I’ll never lose anything again.

Zero Maria Cornejo is having a sale. (See photo above) Run don’t walk.

Grain de chic is a kids’ clothing line that’s designed in Paris but made in Poland. Strange combination, yet the result is magic and well worth checking out…

Who doesn’t want to learn how to make honey saturated with wild roses?

Monday, Monday (on Tuesday)– or more links to help us procrastinate

linerty vans

Might these be my new summer kicks?

I just spent about 10 minutes staring blankly at this screen, with absolutely no idea what to write about. So I figured I’d get inspired by reading what these 13 famous writers have to say about overcoming writer’s block.

I have read those wise and inspirational words, but I still don’t really want to get started. Perhaps I check out a few of the sites on Buzzfeed’s list of 21 Borderline Genius Websites To Productively Procrastinate Everything. This should keep me busy for awhile…

Or maybe all the articles are true and meditation is the answer. But what type to try? Perhaps I can continue to avoid getting this entry up by spending all sorts of time exploring the TM website

Perhaps all of this brain sluggishness is coming from a lack of exercise in my life. Perhaps one of these 7 minute work-out apps is the answer…

But then again, maybe the doctor is actually ordering me to go to the movies (fat chance, but whatever.) Flavorwire has a nice round-up of this Summer 2015 movies that might not totally suck.

Or I could just stay home and listen to NPR’s Note To Self episode about how reading on screens is different from reading book. Duh.

And then there is always shopping– the ultimate procrastination. But how can I resist checking out this round-up of floral kicks on Girls Of Certain Age?

Monday, Monday – or more links about the school year ending, japanese pop songs and multi-racial families…

The music video above is actually better if you are poking your screen.

Every Monday, I suddenly realize that we don’t really have any food in the fridge. Which means that my little posse will not thrive (or even make it through the week) unless I get it together and buy some groceries. So I’m on Fresh Direct, looking at the various types of salmon, and I decide that today is the day I determine, once and for all, which is better for me: farmed vs wild. I found this little chart which explains it all in a lovely graphic format. And once you’re done with the fish question, you can check out all sorts of other Prevention.com food fights and start down the path towards being a fully informed eater.

As well as being Monday, today also marks the true beginning, for us parents, of the slide down from school-year into summer vacation and all of the end-of-year gift giving and recital attending that implies. So once again, I give my fellow parents the gift of Jen Hatmaker’s hilarious post about being the worst end-of-school-year-mom ever. I still can’t read this without laughing so hard that tears stream down my face and I have to stop for a minute and pull myself together.

End-of-the-school-year also means summer reading lists. Here’s the selection Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) recommended for Dinner A Love Story back in 2011. I especially love the total and complete inappropriateness of his last suggestion…

It is also the season to start making berry pies. (and plum pies and peach pies…) Bon Apétit claims that they have the flakiest pie crust recipe ever. But I have been making this pie crust from Smitten Kitchen and it’s hard to imagine a better version. Anyone out there up for doing a bake off?

OK this is totally random but summer is outdoor party season and who doesn’t want their paper cups to be the perfect color? Search no more! Oh Happy Day has all the cups (and plates) you’ll need in every color you can think of.

Oh and last but not least, check out these beautiful portraits of mixed-race families (which I of course love for obvious reasons.)

This week’s Monday, Monday links post comes to you on Tuesday because the cable/phone people were working outside yesterday and my internet was down all day

verizon mess

Here it is, folks. The “state of the art” infrastructure that provides lightning speed internet to my desktop. Oh no wait…

Yesterday felt a little bit like being in some kind of third world country, although evidently The US has some of the slowest (and most expensive for the consumer) internet speeds in the developed world. Go figure.

The Italian army has started growing their own pot. Just one more reason that the Italians are cooler than we will ever be.

And while we’re on the topic of pot, please go to Vimeo and watch a few episodes of High Maintenance. It might be the most hilarious thing you have ever watched on your computer. Or iPad. Or whatever. (ps: The episodes are much better than the trailer, just fyi.)

Oh and while we’re also on the topic of Italy, how about trying out Mark Bittman’s Pasta alla Norma at some point this week?

And then how about some rhubarb almond crumb cake for desert? If you were watching High Maintenance, you might just have the munchies… Plus it’s rhubarb season.

Thank you Apartment Therapy for calling out 30+ items that used to be ubiquitous but are now disappearing from our homes. Like land lines and calculators, both of which I still have, by the way…

Summer vacation is fast approaching. Here are some lovely tips on planting a garden with your kids.

Monday, Monday — or more links about people who make music and things that make noise

I mean, who doesn’t want to listen to this record after seeing the cover? (photo thanks to Brian Eno’s Twitter feed)

Brian Eno just tweeted this link to a six hour MP3 of women making electronic music and I’m listening to it right now.

Speaking of unconventional music, is cricket the other other white meat? Modern Farmer seems to think it might be…

God bless Apartment Therapy for giving us some great ideas for how to store and display our record collection with style, now that we’ve taken all of those LP’s out of the basement…

I hope you have all already seen the incredible James Brown biopic Get On Up. But if you haven’t you must do so. Right. Now.

The people over at Cup Of Jo (because it’s a team of superhumans over there now… not just the inimitable Joanna Goddard) recommend these as the best 7 podcasts to try and I am inclined to believe them.

Gather Journal (which is mostly about food) has some great mixtapes on their website that you guys should check out.

And last, but not least, after much internet research and hoot comparisons, we have determined that we have a Great Horned Owl living on our roof or somewhere very close by. Ah the wilds of Brooklyn…

Monday, Monday– or links to a few things you might want to get your mom (or wife, or sister, etc…) for Mother’s Day

good eggs flowers

A bouquet of seasonal flowers ($29.49) because, well, she deserves a little fresh beauty in her life.

A self watering planter ($100) because no one really wants to have to check on the potted plants every day, but everybody likes a little green in the house.

GJ_fw15_product_8-700x700

What mother has not secretly (or not so secretly) wished for a bottle of Magic Energy Spray ($16) to her her get through the tough times?

jil platner bracelet

Is there ever a bad time to give her a silver bracelet (from $285) from Jill Platner?

gretel home watering can

A watering can upgrade ($68) is never a bad thing.

ion water bottle

Pour some water (or wine, or whatever you’re drinking) into this Shigaraki ion bottle ($40) and the radium minerals in its glaze change the ion content. Which makes everything taste more delicious and is evidently much better for us. We should probably get two of these and keep one for ourselves.
