Yesterday at 5 pm I hauled myself up to midtown to shout and wave signs and take photographs and make sure that Senator Schumer understands that we will not rest until there is an independent investigation into the whole Russia/Trump relationship.

I took lots of pictures, but this one is my favorite. Because it really does just boil down to this simple request, doesn’t it?

Ok so I finally made it to the new Whitney Museum. Way more conveniently located (for me) at the last stop of the L train, but for some reason, the new meat packing locale been far more elusive than the museum’s previous Upper East Side location. It was the Biennial that finally reeled me in… And I found the show to be full of work that speaks to what I feel is one of the most important issues facing us today– that of intersectionality, and the overlapping layers of our combined, shared but very different histories on this Earth.

This photo is jut a detail, but Aliza Nisenbaum’s monumental portrait of a diverse group of women meeting to address the urgent plight of immigrants (MOIA’s Women’s Cabinet, 2016) spoke to me personally as I think of the work I’ve been doing with the Women’s March organizers and of how much power a group of women can have if they choose to wield it. It is an image of hope and strength in a time that seems to be full of dark clouds.

You should all go to see the show– as usual there is a lot of work to look at, to think and argue about, to question and to enjoy. The Whitney Biennial is nothing if not guaranteed food for thought.

My family spent the evening of Valentine’s Day in Washington Square Park with all sorts of artists and activists celebrating Revolutionary Love. I am finding that we are spending lots of time in crowds, holding up signs these days. And also I am finding that there is something really beautiful in standing up, together, for something that you believe in. It is the silver lining in a huge dark cloud. Welcome to the new normal.

This is Rasha and his great dane puppy Tigran. Who is going to be HUGE, by the way…

For the past 6 months, I have been managing the Instagram for a posse of dog lovers called Find Shadow whose current purpose is to help people in Brooklyn and Queens to find their lost dogs. I would never have defined myself as a dog person, but I have to say that hanging out in parks and dog runs and just talking to folks with their awesome four legged partners is starting to make a convert out of me. Plus with all of the hectic stuff that’s going on in our geo-political universe as of late, sometimes you just want to feel good. And nothing feels better than helping somebody find their lost dog.

So in the interest of spreading some of that good feeling around, and also just to let you know that this crew exists and can help you if you’ve lost your dog, I’ve posted some of my favorite shots below. I have been MIA for a little while… First days of summer aka 24/7 parenting, always take me for a loop, and then we went up to a tiny island off the coast of Maine which is mostly, and gloriously, off the grid. And full of treasures like the ones above.

But now I am back in civilization. In the land of math tutors and financial worries, of the frightening reality of racial violence and dangerously insane presidential candidates. But also of artists and the ocean and gleaming skyscrapers and friends.

Here’s to making the crazy reality we are experiencing into the beautiful future we most want to see.

This is the fence leading into our back yard after the last big snowstorm… it feels like a passageway into a magic kingdom…

This is the week that NYC schools close for their mid-winter break. In the past, I generally get all ambitious and plan to continue posting all throughout whilst also being the number one companion for my daughter for 7 days straight. For the record, I almost never keep it all up.

So this time I’ve decided to lighten up the schedule and just spend a bit more time being present with my family… it’s a rare moment when both Josh and Ada are without regular daily commitments. We’ll check out the beach in the winter, take a small trip to Philly, and just generally hang out as a family until our regularly scheduled programming returns.

Very much looking forward to it…

We have been passing this place by for years and finally, finally stopped in for dinner. Recently reopened, it’s a classic and slightly ramshackle Greek steakhouse with quite possibly the best and most gigantic perfectly pink-on-the-inside-charred-on-the-outside steak I’ve ever had. No surprise, as the kitchen is overseen by Colin Ambrose whose Sag Harbor spot, Estia’s Little Kitchen, is one of my all time favorite breakfast joints. Evidently the steak’s success is all about the crazy hot vintage stove. Sure, the main dish was $90, but it was dinner and then lunch again for all three members of my little family, and a happy trio we were.

We’ll be back again for sure.

Another January, another attempt at clearing out all of the excess stuff in my office. This is not, to put it mildly, my first time at this particular rodeo. Nor my second. Or even my third.

But this time is going to be different. I am being kinder to myself. I’ve enlisted the help of a professional (the inimitable Martha Hayden– more about her at a later point), speaking with her over the phone for hours gathering up advice and working on gong about the project in a way that will stick. I’ve even gotten my husband (who has just left his job and is, as such, ripe for activities) into the game.

This is a huge job. It is going to take some time. We have only just begun. But we are determined to, in the words of the great Alan Rickman in Galaxy Quest:

“Never give up. Never surrender.”
